Empowering Dentists with Traditional Chinese Medicine

The ADI-RP Section recently held its first quarterly meeting and seminar last May 20, 2023 at the Waling Waling Room of the Club Filipino in Greenhills.

The seminar introduced Traditional Chinese Medicine to address the musculoskeletal disorders suffered by dentists. The special lecture featured Singapore’s Dr Iris Teo, board certified TCM physician who divides her time between her clinics in Singapore and Manila.

The event, which was entitled ‘Chill, Don’t Take A Pill : Managing Musculoskeletal Pain the Traditional Chinese Medicine Way’, brought together fellows and their guests in a fruitful exploration of ancient healing practices. With a knowledgeable remote speaker from Singapore and a team of experienced staff offering free acupuncture and acupressure treatments, the seminar proved to be a holistic experience for all participants.

Despite not being physically present in the lecture room, the esteemed speaker Dr. Teo ensured a captivating session by delivering her expertise remotely. Her comprehensive knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine provided valuable insights into the management of musculoskeletal disorders commonly experienced by dentists. Through interactive discussions, the speaker elucidated the principles and techniques that have been used for centuries to promote wellness and address the common pains encountered by dentists on a daily basis. Fellow Phides Alcorta was effective in guiding the audience in asking  practical questions that encouraged more participation from our dental professionals.

Recognizing the importance of proactive self-care, the lecturer also emphasized the significance of exercises and stretching techniques tailored to address the specific needs of dentists. By demonstrating the correct postures and movements, she empowered participants with the knowledge to prevent and alleviate muscle pain associated with the profession; as dentists often face musculoskeletal issues due to the nature of their work. This invaluable guidance will undoubtedly contribute to the long-term well-being of the attendees.

To further enhance the seminar's practicality, a team of highly skilled staff members was present on-site. They went above and beyond to provide hands￾on demonstrations and administer acupuncture and acupressure treatments to immersive experience for everyone present. The fellows of the ADI and especially the Committee on Continuing Education, headed by Fellow Christian Ermita are immensely grateful to the team of Dr. Elizabeth So, Janice Dacanay and TCM physician Dr Kim Ki Ho.

Overall, the ADI’s first seminar for 2023 not only focused on professional development but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among the forty four participants. During the dinner segment, the Sunshine Committee headed by Fellow Joy Marañon went the extra mile to acknowledge and celebrate the birthday celebrants for the second quarter. A delightful cake and Individual cupcakes for each celebrator were prepared, symbolizing the unity and support within the community.

Additionally, the event recognized the outstanding achievements of fellows who were given distinction in their respective fields. This acknowledgment not only highlighted their expertise but also inspired others to strive for excellence in their own professional journeys. This quarter’s honorees were Fellow Pearly Lim, Fellow Margaret Tiu, Fellow Dennis Lim and Fellow Vivian Virata. The atmosphere of celebration and appreciation further enriched the overall experience and strengthened the bond among the ADI fellows and members.

The successful seminar on Traditional Chinese Medicine for dentists provided a comprehensive platform for additional learning and personal well-being. With a knowledgeable speaker delivering insights remotely, experienced staff offering hands-on treatments, and emphasis on self-care through exercises and stretching techniques, the event left participants enlightened, empowered and rejuvenated.

Furthermore, the celebration of birthdays and recognition of distinguished fellows added a touch of camaraderie and motivation to the occasion. The seminar was a testament to the dedication of ADI-RP Section officers and the team’s commitment in supporting the holistic development of its members and fostering a sense of community. The ADI-RP Section president Fellow Rochelle Javier adjourned the meeting and delivered her closing remarks- while thanking the audience for their support and enthusiasm.

As the attendees left the seminar armed with newfound knowledge and refreshed spirits, they carried with them the transformative power of traditional Chinese medicine to positively impact their professional and personal lives.

The next quarterly seminar is scheduled for Saturday, August 19, 2023.
